We got back a few weeks ago from our cross-country road trip, spending 60 hours in the car. In this week’s podcast episode, I shared my best tips and systems for going on long road trips with children. This is our second time making the drive, and we solved many pain points for a much smoother experience!

Road-tripping for 3-5 days is a huge undertaking. Knowing that it wouldn’t all go perfectly and everything would still be okay took some of the pressure off. I found it helpful to stay curious and notice what wasn’t working well. Going with a problem-solving mindset keeps the hope alive and allows you to live in your circle of influence.

While living in close quarters with my family, my main reminder was that my job was just to stay calm. I couldn’t solve every problem or stop squabbles, but if I stayed calm, at least things didn’t get worse.

Here are a just a few of the tips you can find in this week’s episode:

  • Bring fewer things! You can always pick items up along the way if needed.
  • Backseat organizers were a huge help when it came to keeping things contained.
  • Leave around 7:30. This makes long days so much easier.
  • Pick some audiobooks that the whole family can enjoy together.

There are even more tips and systems that we found helpful in making our trip run smoothly, so make sure you don’t miss this episode. I hope it helps improve your next road trip with your family!
