Erin Morley is the mother of three children and one of the world’s most sought-after operatic sopranos. In this episode, she talks about melding motherhood with a performing career. Erin believes parenthood is the secret to life because it brings balance and allows an opportunity to care for someone else. She knows that being a singer is important, but being a parent is even more important than that. She takes her motherhood as a serious responsibility and a career in itself. She wants her children to know and feel how much she cares for them.
Erin prioritizes family time while continuing to travel and perform. One of her goals as a mother is to zero-in on her children’s specific needs and meet those needs. She talks about how music enriches her children’s lives. She shares a story about how she was able to calm her baby through singing when speaking or holding them couldn’t. This helped her to realize the value of music in her life and its ability to bless her family.
She talks about mindfulness and finding contentment with living in the moment rather than always looking ahead and wishing her children were in the next phase.
Erin describes how mothers sacrifice for their children in both physical and emotional ways. A talk that compared the physical wounds a mother suffers after childbirth to the scars of Christ helped her find meaning in the physical trials of child-bearing.
Erin finds the moments when her children are most willing to talk and connect and works to prioritize those moments. She practices a “Sweet, Sour, Service” tradition every evening where each member of the family shares a sweet experience, a sour experience, and a way they served that day.
