This is a very personal episode that culminates in the lessons I’ve learned after being pushed past my limits the last six weeks.
Between sick kids and adults, an emergency after hours dental visit and ER trip, big deadlines for my husband and work, and two work trips, I hit a wall of complete exhaustion and breakdown. Honestly, I spent a few days crying in a closet.
But as the days went by I have learned so many lessons as I’ve reflected on our experiences.
When things are at their hardest and I start to wonder if I can make it through one more day, I know that I am just one step away from a breakthrough. When you are in a hard season, one of the best ways to be resilient is to look for the lessons.
What are you learning? How are you growing? To be perfectly frank, those really do come in full force after a breakdown – the crying in the closet types.
I could tell in this season of survival mode that I wasn’t just worn out and exhausted – I was suffering. My defenses were down and my brain ran the easiest paths and I was miserable.
I started paying attention, trying to catch my thoughts. What I discovered was I living in a world of ideals (for example, ideally our family didn’t live a 30 hour drive away so we could go visit for a day or two and have a change of pace).
And those ideals were a sneaky form of should statements. The fix?
Start living in gratitude. Because honestly, there is a WHOLE LOT to be grateful for, even when things aren’t ideal (or even very hard).
For all the lessons I learned this time around, check out this weeks episode.
